The Weather Outside is Frightful - Don't Forget to Keep Your Gas Meter Free of Snow & Ice

Winter Scene, Pullman WAWe have all heard the phrase, "the weather outside is frightful."  Extreme weather conditions causes extreme problems!  We spend our days and nights just trying to keep our walks clear, our gutters running smoothly, and our roofs free from extreme snow loads.  But it is also important not to forget to keep your GAS METER FREE FROM SNOW AND ICE!

Your GAS METER NEEDS TO VENT TO WORK PROPERLY.  So do the VENTS TO YOUR GAS HOT WATER HEATER, FURNACE AND APPLIANCES.  When they can't vent, they won't work causing you a fright you can do without! Who needs the additional headache of having your furnace or electricity not functioning when it is preventable with a few minutes time! When REMOVING SNOW from your meter, GENTLY BRUSH AWAY SNOW.  DO NOT USE SHOVELS OR KICK YOUR METER as it could cause damage that could result in a gas leak!  Also, remember that when large amounts of snow or ice fall on your meter from your roof, it can damage your meter.

ICE IS ALSO AN ENEMY TO YOUR GAS METER AND ELECTRIC METER.  If your meters are encased in ice, call your utility company right away.  They will come clear it for you.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE ICE YOURSELF.  And remember, the utility service personnel will need a path to access your meters in deep snow.

If you should SUSPECT DAMAGE or hear a hissing sound and/or smell gas, CALL YOUR UTILITY COMPANY IMMEDIATELY FROM A PHONE AWAY FROM YOUR HOUSE.  DO NOT GO INSIDE TO USE THE PHONE OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE.  DO NOT TURN ON/OFF LIGHTS.

So, please take a few minutes to check your meters and pass this on to friends, family and clients!  The old saying, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," certainly applies so you can stay warm and safe through these difficult weather conditions.

Lori Cofer's Corner in Pullman WA ~ What is Happening in Pullman This Week?

Today we all woke up with SNOW and LOTS OF IT, probably about four inches right now and still falling. We are expected to get quite a bit followed by cold temperatures...Brrrrrr...please read the cold weather tips at the end to keep your home safe.

The snow sure is pretty and putting everyone in the mood for Christmas!  Here is the scene right out my front door just a few minutes ago!

This week is full of activities such as the LINCOLN SCHOOL BAND CONCERT on the 18th at 7:30.  Being a band member in Junior High and High School myself, I know how hard they work to put on a great show and would love to have you come watch them play.  Do please come! Also, please don't miss Pullman Civic Theater's presentation of "MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET."  They have lots of performances to pick from over the next few weeks.  You can catch the performances at 1220 NW Nye Street on December 12-13 at 7:30, the 14th at 2 PM and again on the weekend of the 19-20 at 7:30 and the 21st at 2 PM.  Call 334-6266 for ticket information.

HOME TIP FOR COLD WEATHER:  Please do remember when cold weather hits to take precautions to keep your home safe by keeping the HEAT TO AT LEAST 55%.  KEEP CUPBOARDS BELOW SINKS OPEN so the heat can freely circulate.  And in severe conditions, KEEP A SMALL STREAM OF COLD WATER FLOWING so your pipes don't freeze. Do use cold water rather than hot as hot water freezes faster!!! ENJOY THE WINTER WONDERLAND!

SUPPORT RALLY IN PULLMAN WA FOR OUR NATIONAL GUARDSMAN

WE LOVE OUR GUARDSMAN AND IT SHOWS!

Support Rally

Saturday, December 6th Pullman Washington held a Christmas Rally to support our local National Guardsman who will be away from home during the upcoming Christmas Season.

The turn out was fantastic with approximately 50 people showing they care by gathering together to write letters and fill handmade Christmas stockings  with donated items for our soldiers. It was an enjoyable time for all!!!!  I, for one, had a blast writing Christmas Cards and getting to see old friends and make new ones too!

The keynote speaker was Michael Baumgartner, a local resident who holds degrees both at WSU and Harvard.  Michael left the private sector in 2007 to become a civilian volunteer with the US State Department in Iraq.  He was appointed Deputy Director in the area of Economics in the Office of Joint Strategic Planning & Assessment at the US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq.  It was a privilege and an honor to hear his experiences and perceptions of the Surge and efforts to reduce Jayesh Al Mehdi militia involvement.   His stories were most interesting and touching.

Rally LunchMuch thanks goes to Rebecca Schwartz, Heather Schwartz, Paula Schwartz and Carey Wilson who organized the event.  Thanks also to the lovely Whitman Senior Living Center who graciously hosted the event and in partnership with Dissmore's put out a luncheon of turkey wraps, veggie trays, cheese and cracker trays, cookies, coffee, tea and eggnog!  WOW!!   And a special note of thanks to Dr. Scott Adams from VMRD who provided shipping for the packages!   THANKS TO ALL!!  I KNOW OUR TROOPS WILL APPRECIATE IT!  I have personally received emails of thanks...so I know HOW MUCH IT MEANS TO THEM!!!!!!
