The Palouse area support for our local troops will be held this Saturday, March 7th from 1:30-3:30. It is a wonderful community event whereby people of all ages can come together to write cards and pack care packages for our local Palouse area troops that are currently overseas. I have been to several of these events and I can tell you it is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon and greet and meet friends both old and new. I have had the wonderful opportunity to sit next to some really special people from little ones that are in grade school to a some very wonderful of our senior citizens.
The Whitman Senior Living Center graciously hosts our event opening wide their doors with such hospitality and for that they deserve a big thanks.
We would love to have you come, whether to write a card or pack a care package! The theme this time will be an Easter theme. You don't need to bring thing! But if you would like to here are some ideas I received from Rebecca Schwartz, the local co-ordinator:
- Easter cards (either cards that you fill out with a message for the soldiers or blank cards for the soldiers to send to their loved ones)
- Easter/spring drawings from your children (soldiers love getting kids' artwork!)
- Fun items (think Dollar Tree-type stuffed animals, games, toys, decorations, etc.) that would fit an Easter/spring theme, but still be appropriate for an all-male unit
- Individually-wrapped chocolates, candies, gum, mints, etc.
- Individually-wrapped snacks (fruit snacks, jerky, trail mix, etc.)
- Hot and cold drink mixes
- Cash donations to cover the cost of postage and care package items are also appreciated
Are we making a difference? You betcha! Here is a note that was forwarded on to Rebecca from Douglas Linguori, SSG. He works at the armory right across the street from me when he is not deployed! He said, "THANK YOU so much for all your support and wonderful help. We really appreciate everything you're doing. God bless everyone." His wife Janne said,"...As a spouse, it means a lot to me that there are people in the area willing to do this as well. It makes their day to get letter/cards/packages from home; and knowing that others in the community support them is a big morale boost too.."
One of the really big hits with the soldiers is a lip balm that Kathleen Tetzlaff made for the troops. She owns http://www.sumptuoussoaps.com/
She received a wonderful note from a solider which says, "I am 23, and have been a combat arms solider in the U.S. Army for 6 years, and I am happy to be here today, serving proudly. I also have to thank you and compliment you on your lip balm...my favorite is vanilla spice!" The guys really seem to love this stuff. For more information feel free to contact Rebecca Schwartz (email: rls@turbonet.com; cell: 509-592-3702)
