Pullman Washington and Moscow Idaho are merely miles from each other. Both are host to their respective universities, Washington State University for Pullman and the University of Idaho for Moscow. Living in Pullman and so near Moscow, we are fortunate to have two universities and all their associated events to provide a wealth of cultural events.
It is soon approaching time for our sister city, Moscow, to hold it's annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival hosted by the University of Idaho. This three day event brings in students and performers both nationally and internationally providing a great three days of fantastic Jazz that just can't be beat!
The Jazz Festival had it's humble beginning in 1967 with a few dozen student groups and one guest artist. The festival went on to new heights in 1981 when the famous Ella Fitzgerald graced the stage. Can you imagine what an event that would have been!
In 1984 Lionel Hampton, inspired by the enthusiasm of all the students, took an active role in our festival and in 1985 the Festival took on his name, the Lionel Hampton National Jazz Festival.
Our Festival has since gown to an international level with nearly 80 musicians from 30 countries performing as well as students both from the states and internationally coming to our competition. Thus, the name was changed to the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival to reflect our new international status!
A basic building block to the Jazz Festival is the Jazz in the Schools program which had it's beginning in 1995. This special program takes the show on the road in Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington to introduce students to this truly American art form known as Jazz.
The Festival takes place in Moscow Idaho on Wednesday February 25th through Saturday February 28th from 8 PM to 11 PM. No doubt, it will have your toes tappin and your fingers snappin...
