Preventative Measures: Carpenter Ants in Whitman County & Pullman WA

In Whitman County over the first week of May, we have seen an unsual swarm of carpenter ants. They are destructive of your home, so an ounce of prevention is necessary now. I encourage my clients to take a few minutes and protect their homes.

These large ants that currently have wings seem to be everywhere right now as they search to set up new nests. These are reproductive queens and males in nuptial flight. Once they mate their wings break off and the queens are in search of setting up a nest.

Suspetible areas are wet wood such as window casings, wet wood from leaks etc. It provides excellent areas for them to create their galleries or tunnels. Wet wood shoud be replaced. And certainly if you have a leak for example under a sink, get that taken care of.

They also love landscaping rail road ties, and rotting trees. And they love to travel on branches that overhang your home as well as cable wires etc. Also, do not keep firewood etc near your home and you might want to elevate off the ground to provide circulation.

You might want to consider spraying now before they set up a nest making it much more challenging to eliminate. The old an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Once you have a nest in your home, you will most likely need a professional help.

It is my understanding that ideally you want something that they will take back to the nest and destroy the nest. I am told that there is a product called Tempo SC which is available at Four Star Supply, Inc in Pullman and Colfax that is child and pet safe once it dries. I am sure there are other products at well availble at the various hardware stores throughout Whitman County.

Current Real Estate Conditions in Pullman WA are Changing!

Our Pulllman Washington Real Estate Market is in full swing and properties are moving quite quickly. Our inventory is lower than it has been in the recent past, so things are changing in our real estate market. That is good news for sellers!

Last week we had 16 properties in Pullman alone go pending, many of which were fresh on the market. I know that I personally had three properties go pending last week, one of which was one of my listings, and two others were buyers I am representing.

Needless to say I have been putting some long hours this week, but it has paid off well for several of my clients. My buyers have wonderful properties under contract, and my seller is thrilled to being moving on in her life.

If you have been considering selling your home in Pullman, it might be a good time to take a look at current values for your home. When inventory is short and demand high for properties, you have an opportunity to get a great value for your home. That being said, it must be priced well, presented well, and marketed in a manner to get the most exposure for your home. This simple idea sets the nice stage for a first impression. I just picked up a tray for wet shoes and filled it with 5 bags of washed and polished stones. Then set the stage with a little prompt to remind your buyers to remove their shoes.

It will not only keep people from tracking through the home, it will keep the front door area nice and dry.

2013 Pulllman WA Real Estate - Lori's ready to go!

The New Year has begun in the Pullman Washington Real Estate Market. And I am super excited for the upcoming year. Last year was a very successful one for me in Whitman County and Pullman. I performed in the top 5 in both categories in our association in 2012 of which I am very thankful and proud as this is a huge accomplishment for me.

With that being said, there is never resting on our laurels in this business. I am excited for the New Year. I have been getting all my education done with new business cards, signs and riders to provide a fresh look. And some new and exciting marketing ahead.

Well...off to get a closing across the table, an inspection response to get worked through, and some calls to return to clients...looking like I am off to a good start this year!

Dutch Babies With Rum Apples

If you have never tried Dutch babies or oven apple puff pancakes you should. They are really easy. And we did a bit of a twist by adding some rum to the apple mixture. This makes two very large pancakes that serves 3-4 people

Preheat oven to 425 degrees

2-3 apples thinly sliced

Cinammon

3 tbs brown sugar

2 tbs rum

1 cup milk

1 cup flour

1/2 cup sugar

6 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

Butter

Saute 2-3 apples over medium heat in butter till soft. Add cinnamon to taste. Add brown sugar and rum.

Meanwhile mix eggs, flour, milk, sugar and vanilla. Mix very well till light and airy.

Put a large pat of butter in 2 round cake pans. Put in oven to melt. Watch carefully as oven is very hot. Once melted, divide apple mixture between pans then divide pancake batter between pans as well. Put in hot oven immediately. Bake for 20-25 minutes till golden brown and puffy. DO NOT OPEN OVEN DOOR TO CHECK AS THEY WILL FALL.

When done put butter in the middle sprinkle with powered sugar and syrup. Whipped cream is also a nice touch. Enjoy!

Gearing Up For Real Estate in 2013!

All Real Estate Agents need to do their continuing education. I am licensed in both Washington & Idaho, and each state is different with respect to the hours and classes needed. One of the things I always try to do is jump start my year and get that education in place before the end of the year and the beginning of the busy year ahead.

I am really looking forward to next year in Real Estate. This has been a good year for me business wise. I have had more transactions this year, than any other previous years. And, I have had the best clients this year as well. I still am in the process of getting a property closed in the next week, so I have continued to work. In fact, I have had a closing every single month for two years straight, with the exception of one deal that fell apart this fall. And those things certainly happen in real estate.

I was honored to be nominated for Realtor of the Year in Whitman County. It is a collegue based nomination and certain requirements must be met to be nominated including a certain number of transactions, service to the associaton and community events. Now, make no mistake, it is an honor in deed!

But my goal is to be my clients Realtor of a lifetime! Happy clients give me a joy that can't compare. And I have had many great testimonials this year from my clients. Ironically, my clients often send them to me without even asking. Now that makes me feel great about my services!

I am gearing up for next year with some changes ahead. And I look forward to an incredible New Year next year. I have freshened up, and continue to freshen up my business with a name change, bringing back my maiden name of Churchill, a fresh picture, new sign riders and new cards. I can't wait for the new materials to arrive!

Pullman Real Estate - Ready Set Go!

December is typically slower in the Pullman Washington Real Estate Market. But I count myself to still be working, with a super sweet couple I am trying to get into their first home by Christmas.

I love working with all buyers and sellers, but I will always hold a special place in my heart for the first time home buyer. It is so exciting to get them into their first home. I love taking them through the process and trying to make it as stress free and seamless as possible! And there is nothing quite as rewarding for me as handing them the keys! I will always love that!!!

I am also busy working away on getting ready for the upcoming Spring Market. I always use December to get the jump start on the next year. It is a great time to get new systems into place for the upcoming year, as well as a great time to do all that continuining education for license renewal. I just ordered new riders, new cards and got my continuing education in place. So I am off to a great start!

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 30

For the month of November I have been writing a series on 30 things to do in or around Pullman Washington. As Realtor that helps clients relocate to our community, I thought this might be helpful.

For day 30, I have to look forward to December and the lighting of our downtown Pullman Christmas Tree! Holiday Fest is great Pullman downtown event! The center of action is, of course, the lighting of the tree in Pine Street Plaza.

But there are events staring at 4! At 4 we have the Jingle Bell Kids' Fun Run. There is also a Holiday Costume Contest. At 4:30 the tree takes center stage when it is lit! There are is also local choirs and and bands performing Holiday usic with FREE HOT COCOA and COOKIES!

Santa arriaves at 5! And at 5:30 we have a drawing for the Home for the Holiday's Prize Pack. And to top off the night a Marshmallow roast at Paradise Creek Brewery!

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 29

As a Realtor that helps lots of folks relocate to our great community, I am often asked about things to do or great restaurants to visit. One you must put on your short list of restaurants to try is "The Black Cypress."

The Black Cypress is abosolutely amazing! I have had the privilege of eating there many times, and it impresses me everytime. Two of my favorites are the incredible pork chops....and the chicken is beyond words in my humble opinion. And their rolls are irresistible. I know...I have tried to resist to no avail!

I have both been treated and treated many people to a wonderful nite at the Cypress. They also have a great selection of beautiful wines and a great selection of some of the best micro brews to compliment your dinner. They also have a intimate bar as well. The service is exceptional...and I mean exceptional! They are knowledgeable, friendly and serve in almost a seamless motion.

The restaurant is small and intimate. They have recently expanded next door as well to sit larger parties. I think that was a good move for this restaurant whose reputation is growing both in Pullman and outside Pullman as well. So if you are near Pullman, you might want to treat yourself to dinner at the Black Cypress.

They are located at 215 Main Street in downtown Pullman. The bar is open 4 till lave Monday-Saturday, with dinner from 5-10 Monday-Saturday.

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 28

Living in small town like Pullman, we have a lot of small independent restaurants and coffee shops. One of the great downtown independent coffee shops is the Daily Grind.

The atmosphere is very casual with a unique mix of old chairs, tables and benches. As it is located in historic downtown, the building affords lots of little spaces and rooms that provide great privacy for students studying and a great place to have coffee with friends or clients. We also have our staff meetings there ocassionally.

The staff is friendly and they have greata barristas. I personally have a few favorites. I have had a great mozerralla sandwich in the past, and for the morning I love my yogurt and granola with tea. They also have great bagels, and some incredible looking goodies.

I often send clients down for a cup of coffee while I am working away getting there paperwork in order on an offer as it is just a block down the street. And my clients all really enjoy going somewhere unique to Pullman. So, stop in and give it a try!

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 27

Today at our staff at the Daily Grind, there was this great wagon stuffed with WSU items to raffle off to benefit the Willow Center for Grieving Children. It was appropriately titled "Wave the Flag - Go Cougs" as it was stuffed with Cougar items sponsored by the Bookie and the Holiday Inn Express. The wagon is valued at $500.00 and tickets are a $5 or 5 for $20. What a great valued!

I was also most interested in Willow Center for Greiving Children and have placed a call into see what I can personally do to help. It is a program to help children who are going through difficult emotional difficulties, including the loss of a parent. According to their brochure, they have a camp as well which is an annual weekend overnight camp for kids ages 6-17.

They also provide a safe place for youngsters going through such a tragedy to learn coping skills, get support, and understand the grieving process.

I personally feel drawn to such a great cause on a personal note as I lost my mother early in life at the age of 15, and understand how difficult it is....and so happy to do what I can to support this great cause! You can also find them on facebook!

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 26

Got the Monday blues after Thanksgiving? Tired of leftover turkey? I have a great suggestion for you. You might want to pop over to Moscow Idaho and go to dinner at "Nectar."

It is a great little locally owned restaurant, and they have incredibly good food. Nikki Woodland is the owner of the restaurant, and everytime I have been there the food has been very good.

They have a very extensive menu, including one very unusual item that gets rave reviews from Inlander. They are known for an incredible meatloaf....yes...that is right....meatloaf! It is a bacon wrapped meatloaf with a chipolte barbeque sauce. It is back on the menu after it was rotated off and so many wanted it back on! And on Monday, they do a special with a Meatloaf Monday Dinner Sandwich special!

They are located at 105 W. 6th in Moscow Idaho....just a few minutes from Pullman Washington. So swing over and enjoy the Meatloaf Monday Special and break those Monday blues!

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 25

Living in Pullman Washington puts us in a great location for many outdoor activities, including being within about 30 minutes to some of the best inland fishing. As I grew up in the Lewiston Clarkston Valley, I am personally partial to the confluence of the Snake River and the Clearwater River. And this time of the year the Steelhead are running.

The river is lined with people in boats trying their luck....and many along the banks fishing as well. There is an abundance of fish to be found including Trout & Bass, as well as a steelhead run and two Salmon runs as well.

Now I don't personally fish. I have never really caught the "bug"...no pun intended. But I know lots of people who do. And many of my closest friends love to fish.

My style is to sit on a chair and read a book, enjoying the peace and quiet. I find peace in looking at the sides of the hill and being near the water, most likely because it just feels like home. To the left is a picture that I look within the last few weeks during a steelhead outing with two very special friends of mine.

There are many outdoor supply stores in the area and they will have both all the licenses you might need, as well as tackle etc. So if you are visiting Pullman, make sure to bring your fishing gear!

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 24

Day 24 of 30 things to in Pullman requires a bit of a road trip 45 minutes south to Lewiston Idaho for the Winter Spirit Holiday lights at Locomotive Park.

I am personally looking forward to it a great deal. I am taking my grand daughter to the see the lights tonight, letting Momma and Dadda have a date night out. She is just a little over 2 and I really looking forward to strolling down through the arches with her. And I know she will love seeing the train all lit up!

According to their websight at www.winterspirit.com the park was light up as of November 17th this year. The lights are on Sunday from 4:30 to 10 at night. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 to 9 at night, and Thursday Friday and Saturday from 4:30 till midnight.

There is also an outdoor fireplace and believe me we will be snuggled up enjoying the fire. And I suspect there will be lots of pictures tonight. The fireplace is on Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 to 8 at night, and Friday, Saturdays and Holidays till 10 at night.

30 Things To Do in Pullman Washington: Day 23

Today is a big day in Pullman Washington! We host the 2012 Apple Cup Football game. Apple Cup for those of you new to Washington is a huge rilvary between the WSU Cougars and the U of W Huskies. Each year it is hosted alternatively between the home town of the Cougars in Pullman Washington, and Seattle, the home town of University of Washington. It is always a great game as the rivalry is a huge one!

Typically it is played on the the first official day of the Thanksgiving Break for the students which is a Saturday. This year it will be the day after Thanksgiving. Kickoff is at 12:30

I am really looking forward to the game, and seeing some good friends!
